Mayo Clinic Diet

The purported Mayo Clinic Diet has been circulating around the internet for more than 30 years. Regardless of what the name implies, it is in no way related to the world renowned Mayo Clinic of Minnesota USA and is definitely a diet that is NOT endorsed by the Mayo Clinic.

It appears that over the years, the Mayo Clinic Diet has 'evolved' and now appears in many forms but the general principle remains the same. It is a diet that takes out completely the starches and sugars in your diet, limits caffeine intake whilst at the same time allows you to consume as much grapefruit, meat and high fat foods as you like. And that is the attraction of the Mayo Clinic diet - it appears to sing the praises of grapefruit with its 'fat burning qualities' and gives you the go ahead to indulge in foods which most dieticians tell you are 'bad' for you.

Mayo Clinic Diet advantages

Are there any advantages in the Mayo Clinic Diet? It does have something going for it in that you will lose weight quickly - that's the advantage in all low carbohydrate diets.

Mayo Clinic Diet disadvantages

The Mayo Clinic Diet is not a solution for long term weight loss and healthy weight maintenance. High fat diets result in heart disease later on in life. Low carbohydrate diets can cause weakness. Grapefruit does not have the 'fat burning' qualities that the Mayo Clinic Diet ascribes to.

I'd be very careful about starting on this diet regime (if at all) - it's not something I'd recommend at all.
