Mesotherapy
Mesotherapy - what is it?

|
Mesotherapy was pioneered by a French doctor (Dr Michel Pistor to be exact) in 1952. Mesotherapy is a non-surgical, relatively painless injection technique which aims to target a whole range of cosmetic 'problems' faced by women (and men). Mesotherapy acts to promote the body's own circulatory, lymphatic and immune system to create a biological response in the body to reverse the effects of abnormal physiology. Mesotherapy is so termed because it is targetting the middle layer (or mesoderm) of the skin.
Mesotherapy - how does it work?
Mesotherapy works by utilizing the body's own naturally occuring enzyme called lecithin which is primarily responsible for breaking down the fats in the body. Injecting (a series of microinjections) lecithin into the problem areas results in the following :
- it blocks fat deposits
- it triggers fat release in those areas which are the hardest to 'treat' with diet and exercise. The fat located in the thighs, tummy and upper arm are notorious for being difficult to shift despite dietary and exercise efforts.
- it increases circulation to remove those deposits
Mesotherapy - the actual procedure
Mesotherapy works through a series of microinjections with 25-100 injections given weekly over a period of 6-10 weeks. Most patients will see the results within 4 weeks.
Mesotherapy - the advantages
Until now, the only effective means of treating problem fat areas involved plastic surgery. Unlike surgery, mesotherapy is virtually painless, requires no post-operative recovery time, does not require you to wear bandages or girdles as in surgery and the patient does not need to go under anesthesia. And because the injected material is a natural product that occurs in your body anyway, side effects are minimal (some bruising and slight itching may occur in the injected area).
Mesotherapy - treatment areas
The treatment area can be patient specific - which is the beauty of mesotherapy. You can target your most problematic areas. Usually this would be the legs, buttocks, hips (love handles), upper arms.

Mesotherapy - best candidates
The ideal candidate for mesotherapy is a person that is in good health, exercises regularly, is within 25 pounds of their ideal body weight, and has deposits of fat that have not responded to exercise. Treatment is not recommended for people who are insulin dependant diabetics, are pregnant or have a history of stroke, recent cancer, blood clots or heart disease.
Mesotherapy - the success rates
Latest medical trials from Europe reveal a 92% success rate. Reported by the journal of Dermatology (Oct 2003), mesotherapy is the world’s first treatment that is medically proven to be safe, effective and low cost, that is able to correct cellulite problems by improving circulation, strengthening connective tissues, and dissolving excess fat. Recent clinical research in Austria by Dr. Franz Hasengschwandtner, President of the Austrian Society for Lipolysis has provided positive research results with a 92% success rate on treatments.
