Pink Eye Symptoms
Pink eye - general facts
Pink eye is the common term for conjunctivitis or infection of the inside of your eyelid. Generally it is caused by things such as allergies, viruses, chemicals or bacteria or a combination of them. For example, you may get pink eye symptoms from a virus and then get a secondary bacterial infection on top of it.
Pink eye symptoms
- red, weeping eye which may or may not be itchy
- swollen puffy eyes
- if related to allergies, there could be other symptoms like a runny nose and sneezing
- if complicated by bacteria, the eyes will have that 'gummy' look especially after a long sleep.
Note that pink eye (that is not allergy related) is highly contagious. Contrary to belief you cannot catch pink eye from staring at another person. If you develop symptoms of pink eye, see your doctor and you will be probably be prescribed eye drops to get rid of it. Whilst you have pink eye symptoms, wash your hands thoroughly everytime you administer medication to your eyes and everytime you touch your face. Don't rub the infected pink eye and then touch the good eye because that's how it gets spread!
