Strep Throat Symptoms

Strep throat - what is it?

Strep throat is the common term for a bacterial infection of the throat with Streptococcus. Strep throat is more common is children than adults. Just because you have symptoms of a sore throat does not automatically mean you have a strep throat infection. There are other viruses and bacteria that can cause a sore throat. To confirm a strep throat infection, your doctor will take a swab of your throat to send it away for lab analysis. It usually takes 24-48 hours to find out whether the results are positive for strep throat or not. If you have a runny nose or cough with a sore throat, then it is usually not a strep throat infection.
