Nicotinamide, Black Cohosh, Anti-oxidants, Coenzyme Q10 - these names are all bandied around in the health market. What are these? We all know that vitamins are important but how important are they? Don't we get enough in our diet? Do we really need supplementation? What's the function of the different vitamins in our body? Are more vitamins better?
Here we will endeavor to review the various vitamins and provide some insights into the world of vitamins so that you will have adequate information to form your own judgements about what is fact and fiction when it comes to vitamins. As a general rule of thumb, vitamins are broken up into your water soluble vitamins eg Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid), your B Vitamins, and your fat soluble vitamins which are Vitamins A, D, E and K. What's so important about that? With fat soluble vitamins, there is a possibility of overdose but with water soluble vitamins, as a general rule, they will get flushed out via the kidneys so there is a lower risk of getting too much.
Aren't vitamins in your diet sufficient? As a general rule, it's best to pops vitamins with a meal as it aids in the absorption of the vitamins in the pill. The question you need to ask yourself is how well do you eat nowadays? If you are someone who is really into eating well and have a balanced diet then I'd say good for you, you probably have enough to get by.
